Three Glen of Imaal Terriers showing wheaten, blue and brindle coat colours

Featured Glens

A visual guide to the Glen of Imaal Terrier: the wheaten, blue and brindle coats, dogs and bitches, puppies and veterans that make up this rare Irish breed.

One of the pleasures of the Glen of Imaal Terrier is how much individuality lives within a consistent breed type. Every Glen is unmistakably a Glen — low, sturdy, bearded and honest — yet coats, colours and characters vary delightfully. This page is a friendly guide to the variety you will meet across the breed.

The Wheaten Glen

Wheaten Glens range from pale cream through warm gold, often with a slightly darker mask or shading. It is a soft, farmhouse colour that suits the breed's easygoing image, and it shows off the harsh coat texture beautifully. Wheaten pups are usually born close to their adult colour.

The Blue Glen

Blue Glens carry a coat from steel to deep slate, frequently with lighter or brindled points. Many are born very dark — even black-looking — and clear to their true blue as they mature over the first couple of years, a transformation Glen owners love to watch.

The Brindle Glen

Brindle Glens wear a tapestry of interwoven shades — blue-brindle and wheaten-brindle among them — that can be strikingly beautiful and no two of which are quite alike. Brindling often becomes clearer and more defined as a dog grows up.

Dogs, Bitches and the Generations

Males tend to be a touch heavier and more substantial; females are often, in the Glen's case, the more assertive characters at home. Puppies are famously sturdy little tanks, all body and determination, while veteran Glens age gracefully into dignified, gentle companions. Across all of them runs the same steady temperament described on our temperament page.

Learning to See the Breed

The more Glens you see — at shows, at gatherings, and in the photo gallery — the better your eye becomes for correct type: substance without coarseness, harshness of coat, and that characteristic big-dog-on-short-legs outline. For the official picture, compare what you see against the breed standard. It is a rewarding way to deepen your appreciation of this rare and remarkable Irish terrier.
